Within a few days of arriving back in Orpington without the prospect of returning to Hampstead, all the boredom I used to feel returned with a vengeance. Who envisaged this dreary existence? All the quiet, quaintness of a town in Kent combined with the dissatisfied youths of south east London, the don't-give-a-fuck attitude of commuters who refuse to acknowledge they moved up half a social class or so, and the downright depressing nature of the lack of any culture or life.
The mind loses most of its aspirations when faced with such a locale. As Jarvis Cocker noted, people in such towns 'dance and drink and screw, cos there's nothing else to do'.
